Las remesas de los migrantes latinoamericanos y caribeños en los Estados Unidos

Abstract

En este artículo se analizan las características sociodemográficas y económicas de los migrantes latinoamericanos y caribeños que envían remesas desde los Estados Unidos a sus países de origen. El análisis se basa en los datos de la encuesta nacional de latinos 2002 (2002 National Survey of Latinos) y se realiza mediante técnicas de regresión logística. Las características individuales, la habilidad financiera para hacer envíos, las obligaciones familiares en el hogar y en el país de destino y los vínculos del migrante con su país de origen tienen repercusiones en el envío de estos recursos. Los resultados del trabajo concuerdan con hallazgos de investigaciones previas con una novedad: la probabilidad de enviar remesas a los países de origen es mayor entre los migrantes que poseen una cuenta bancaria en el país de destino que entre los migrantes que no la tienen. Por lo tanto, independientemente de la condición migratoria, poseer una cuenta bancaria en el país de destino permite a los migrantes administrar mejor sus recursos económicos, aumenta la posibilidad de enviar remesas a su país de origen y fortalece su proceso de ciudadanía económica.
