Las uniones conyugales en América Latina: transformaciones en un marco de desigualdad social y de género

Abstract

En este artículo se busca aportar información y elementos de reflexión sobre las tendencias que distinguen a la formación y disolución de las uniones conyugales en América Latina en un marco de desigualdad social y de género, característico de los países de la región. Las autoras se preguntan si los cambios ocurridos en los patrones de unión podrían constituir indicios de una segunda transición demográfica. La información proveniente de censos y encuestas relativa a las tendencias que hoy se observan en la edad respecto de la unión conyugal, el celibato permanente, las uniones consensuales y los divorcios y separaciones se complementa con aquella proveniente de las investigaciones centradas en las diferencias sociales, en la condición de la mujer latinoamericana y en las relaciones de género. Estos son los sustentos para la posterior discusión que se lleva a cabo sobre la pertinencia explicativa de la teoría de la segunda transición demográfica en el estudio de la realidad poblacional y social latinoamericana.
