América Latina: los censos del 2000 y el desarrollo social

Abstract

La contribución de los censos de población en el nuevo siglo se analiza a la luz de los avances tecnológicos para el procesamiento de los datos, así como de las demandas de información y las metas de desarrollo social, cuyo seguimiento depende de fuentes de datos de amplia cobertura y continuidad en el tiempo. Se abordan cuestiones tales como la necesidad de revalorizar el censo como proyecto de inversión social, la colaboración con el sector privado, las nuevas formas de relación entre usuarios y productores, y las alternativas a los censos convencionales. En cuanto a los contenidos específicos, el censo es una fuente de datos privilegiada para la identificación y el seguimiento de las metas de desarrollo social de los países y de los planes de acción que han surgido de las diferentes cumbres internacionales. Se dan ejemplos para los temas de familia, niñez, juventud, equidad de género, envejecimiento y población indígena.
