Democracia y preocupación medioambiental: un análisis para países seleccionados de países de América del Sur

Abstract

El medio ambiente es vital para el desarrollo social y económico. Comprender cómo perciben las instituciones y las personas los problemas ambientales permite formular políticas más efectivas. El objetivo de este estudio es evaluar cómo influye el régimen político de una muestra de países sudamericanos en la preocupación ambiental de las personas. Para lograr este objetivo, se utilizó un modelo de datos de panel no lineal con datos obtenidos de la Encuesta Mundial sobre Valores y el índice de Freedom House. En el modelo logit con efectos aleatorios y ficticios (dummy) de las oleadas de la encuesta y país, se registró un efecto positivo y estadísticamente significativo entre democracia y preocupación ambiental, lo que demuestra que la población de los países democráticos tiende a mostrar más conciencia ambiental. Las variables sociodemográficas relativas a la edad, el nivel educativo y el estado civil también presentaron el comportamiento esperado.
