Efectos a largo plazo de la volatilidad del tipo de cambio real y la calidad institucional en la complejidad económica

Abstract

Este artículo analiza si la volatilidad del tipo de cambio real y la calidad institucional, combinadas como variables condicionantes de la especialización productiva de las economías, pueden tener un impacto negativo en la capacidad de un país para alcanzar una mayor complejidad económica, especialmente en países con una canasta exportadora dominada por los productos básicos y basada en recursos naturales. La metodología utilizada en la investigación consistió en estimar un panel de cointegración (grupo de medias agrupadas) con datos de 1995 a 2018 en una muestra de 54 países. Los resultados obtenidos indican que la volatilidad del tipo de cambio real supone efectivamente un obstáculo para la aplicación de medidas estructurales dirigidas a diversificar y hacer más sofisticado el tejido productivo de un país, mientras que la calidad de sus instituciones ejerce un efecto positivo en su complejidad económica y mejora sus posibilidades de desarrollar las capacidades locales.
