Movilidad social y demanda de redistribución del ingreso en América Latina

Abstract

Según señalan Alesina y Angeletos (2005) y Alesina y Glaeser (2004), las preferencias en materia de redistribución del ingreso varían sistemáticamente entre las diversas regiones e inciden en la dimensión del gobierno y la composición de los gastos públicos. En este artículo se analiza la demanda redistributiva en América Latina, con particular atención a los efectos de las expectativas de movilidad en la demanda de redistribución. Los resultados sugieren el predominio de la demanda por interés personal y por consideraciones de justicia basadas en la desigualdad de oportunidades. Asimismo, se revela la importancia de la movilidad pasada y el rechazo de la hipótesis de la perspectiva de movilidad ascendente de Benabou y Ok (2001) con respecto a la región latinoamericana.
