Crece y cambia la clase media en América Latina: una puesta al día

Abstract

En este trabajo se utiliza una definición bidimensional de clasemedia, en que se combinan la ocupación del principal proveedor deingreso del hogar (manual, no manual); y el ingreso familiar como unavariable sustitutiva del consumo. Esto permite explorar los cambios"objetivos" de la clase media en América Latina entre 1990 y 2007. Seanalizan los cambios "subjetivos" en valores, aspiraciones e identidadde clase, entre otros. Resalta el crecimiento tanto relativo como absolutode los sectores medios, así como el incremento generalizado de laeducación, opacado por la devaluación de su importancia relativapara generar ingreso, y la menor relevancia de la diferencia entreocupaciones manuales y no manuales de nivel bajo como determinantedel ingreso. La heterogeneidad de los estratos medios se evidenciatanto en cortes verticales como horizontales, relacionados con diferentestipos de riesgos y niveles de bienestar característicos de los hogaresde cada segmento.
