Abstract

The proper names form an important part of cultural elements.  As they are not known in the target culture or have a different connotational value for the target language recipients, they usually become one of the main problems in translation.  Translators undertake some translation strategies and techniques to cope with the difficulties when translating cultural elements since they are culturally marked, which means that they refer to objects, people, and places known well in the source culture but not known or not existing in the target culture.  The aim of this study is to draw attention to the strategic choices for the translation of proper names from French into Turkish in Les Six Voyages en Turquie, en Perse et aux Indes de Jean Baptiste Tavernier.  First, the article presents the theoretical considerations which deal with different aspects of proper names in translation and then, the information about Jean Baptiste Tavernier and his book Les Six Voyages en Turquie, en Perse et aux Indes.   Finally, the translation strategies provided by the translator used for the translation proper names in Les Six Voyages en Turquie, en Perse at aux Indes de Jean Baptiste Tavernier are explained through examples.  In the study, it was found  that the strategies of preservation, globalization and transformation were mostly used .
