La Concentración como la Fuente del Poder de las Aseguradoras frente a las Prestadoras del Servicio de Salud en Colombia

    El sistema de salud colombiano presenta evidencia del poder de mercado que ostentan las EPS con respecto a sus vecinos inmediatos en la cadena - las IPS hospitalarias. El presente trabajo pone esta hipótesis sobre un piso de la evidencia empírica y muestra que la concentración de las EPS esta más alta que la de sus proveedores - las IPS hospitalarias. Los hospitales tratan de defenderse, construyendo "islas" de la concentración en unas especialidades selectas. Sin embargo, incluso las especialidades mas concentradas no llegan al nivel de la concentración de las aseguradoras. El desequilibrio en el grado de la concentración explica el poder de mercado ejercido por las EPS respecto a las IPS hospitalarias. El poder de mercado funciona como una de las causas que explican la difícil situación financiera de las IPS hospitalarias. Se sugieren unas medidas concretas para corregir dicha situación.
