Industria y Desarrollo Regional en Brasil

Abstract

Este articulo tiene como objetivo la realizacion de un analisis de la economia brasileña en el periodo 1960-2000, desde una perspectiva sectorial y regional, analizando las diferencias de Brasil tanto con los paises del entorno como con otras economias mas desarrolladas, y las diferencias regionales de PIB por habitante en el propio pais. Las diferencias en el nivel educativo de la poblacion explican una gran parte de las diferencias regionales de nivel de industrializacion y de desarrollo economico. Presentamos un modelo econometrico que pone de manifiesto el importante impacto positivo de la industria sobre el crecimiento economico de Brasil, que es de especial interes para las politicas de desarrollo regional. This article analyses the Brazilian economy during the period 1960-2000 from a sectoral and regional perspective. We analyze the differences between Brazil and other countries as well as the regional differences of development inside the country. We find that differences in the educational level of population are of uppermost importance to explain differences in industrial development and Gross Domestic Product by inhabitant at regional level. We present an econometric model which shows the positive impact of industry on Brazilian economic growth, which is of special interest for regional economic policies.
