Abstract

(VA) Organizations can rely on a variety of levers to maintain stakeholders’ support: adoption of new practices, utilization of symbols, explanations, justifications… Among these choices, rhetoric plays a specific part. It is used to reinforce the identification of stakeholders with the desired organizational identity and thus to strengthen it. Stakeholders’ support is a major concern for organizations in the social and solidary economy. On top of customers and owners, they also depend on voluntary workers as well as donors to ensure their sustainability. In this article, we therefore analyze the link between the rhetoric of social and solidary economy organizations, their identity and the importance given to their various stakeholders. Based on a study of a 100 000 words corpus extracted from 97 websites, we show that the discourse is adapted to stakeholders perceived as essential for the organization and that the choice to communicate on a specific identity depends on which stakeholders to satisfy.
