Abstract

This article investigates the nature of interdependencies between business models and their modes of elaboration in related diversification strategies. It is based on an exploratory case study developed with THALES, a world leader in the ASD industry (IT and electronics). We have three contributions. First, we identify the variables at the origin of interdependencies between the different (business unit) business models. Second, we point out the role of corporate business models as tools for horizontal and vertical coordination to support the elaboration of the portfolio of business unit business models. Third, we analyze the managers as boundary spanners to support the elaboration of business models, and point out the role of teams of boundary spanners to elaborate (and handle) the interdependencies between business models.
