Emerging Technologies for Museums to Cope with Covid-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Museums are cultural institutions with an important role in preserving history and tradition. But simple care for objects has no relevance, if there is not at least one person who needs that object. Every museum institution, at the micro or macro level, strives to find solutions to become relevant as an institution for the community, that is, for a wide range of visitors, of different ages, identities and social classes. New and innovative ways to engage with visitors (physical and online) and potential visitors are needed in the context of Covid-19 pandemic. This paper seeks to explore the added-value of emerging technologies implemented by museums in their quest to cope with restrictions and offer immersive experiences to their visitors. The restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic further deepened the need of new and innovative ways to engage with visitors, especially where the connection with the public was deficient or at a primary level and relevance to the community could not be demonstrated or quantified. The purpose of this study is to identify the main benefits brought by the implementation of AI technologies in the current activity of museums, by analyzing the best practices from museums that have assumed digital transformation as their main objective and record successful implementation results, from 3 continents: Europe, USA and Australia.
