Abstract

Dental agenesis is one of the most frequent anomalies in human oral development. The congenital absence of upper lateral incisors is associated with displacement and rotation of canines and premolars, which can cause malocclusion, periodontal disease and phonation problems, among others. This article analyzes the consequences of dental agenesis on occlusion by means of a review of the literature. Databases such as PubMed and Google Scholar were consulted, covering publications from 1995 to the present, selecting 19 relevant articles. It is concluded that early detection and treatment of dental agenesis is key to preventing malocclusions, improving masticatory function and avoiding future complications in the oral health of the patient
