Abstract

Introduction: Comprehensive care for the frail elderly is a challenge for the professional performance of the Comprehensive General Medicine specialist in primary health care. Objective: To design a professional development strategy to improve the performance of the Comprehensive General Medicine specialist in the care of the frail elderly. Methods: A descriptive and mixed observational research (quantitative with qualitative elements) was carried out at the Municipal Polyclinic of Santiago de Cuba, from March 2019 to February 2021. The study population was made up of the 28 Comprehensive General Medicine specialists located in the health area's clinics. The improvement of the professional performance of the MGI specialist in the care of the frail elderly was used as a study variable. The strategy was carried out in four stages. Results: In the cognitive dimension, a positive modification was demonstrated in all its indicators, reaching figures of 75% and more; The bioethical dimension showed figures of 95% and above, the care dimension showed figures of 90% and above, of the four indicators evaluated in the scientific research, indicator 4.2 related to the frequency with which publications are made was the one that experienced the least changes (42%). Conclusions: The comparative results of the observations made in the performance and in the applied satisfaction survey, made it possible to recognize the validity of the proposed improvement strategy in most of the indicators, since the frequency with which publications are made remained affected after the strategy.
