Abstract

Trans-Abstract: Purpose – i.e. the endeavor to pursue a socially relevant mission beyond profit – serves as a driver for innovation, employee motivation and customer satisfaction. However, there are also critical aspects: The need to fulfill an authentic purpose can lead to overload or be misused as a marketing tool. Thus, start-ups risk losing their credibility if the purpose is not deeply rooted in their corporate culture. Moreover, tensions occur when short-term financial goals jeopardize the long-term sense of purpose. This article sheds light on the opportunities and challenges of purpose integration and illustrates how purpose-driven initiatives can lead start-ups towards a dynamic growth phase.
