Abstract

Based on agency theory and resource based view, we argue that family influence entails specific goals that ultimately affect the use of controlling techniques. We collected data from 101 small and medium-sized family firms. A mediation analysis shows that higher family influence is associated with lower levels of controlling usage. The existence of family-centered goals and the preference for informal structures drive the avoidance of operative controlling, whereas low levels of appreciation and the lack of conflicts of interest lead to the avoidance of strategic controlling.
