Abstract

Based upon the recent discussion concerning financing in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), crowdlending has established itself as an alternative means of SME financing during the last few years. By this instrument, SMEs can get access to a supposedly easier and less bureaucratic means of finance. This should enhance SMEs’ possibilities to finance research and development as well as innovations. This article structures existing theoretical and empirical evidence regarding the comparison of credit financing and crowdlending in SMEs and adds results from an empirical study conducted in 2015. As a result, evidence-based results can be used to enhance the practical knowledge concerning SMEs’ financing.
