Abstract

Due to their economic relevance high-growth firms are attracting a lot of public and scientific attention. Entrepreneurship researchers are particularly interested in the economic influence and growth factors of such firms. The purpose of our research was to enhance our understanding of the so called „gazelles“ by identifying a comprehensive set of internal growth factors by means of a grounded theory oriented approach. By analyzing ten cases it was possible to find a set of internal determinants that are mainly in line with precedent empirical findings. The new contribution of our paper is a growth model that was developed on the basis of structuration theory according to Anthony Giddens. The well-founded model reveals that company growth is much more than a lucky coincidence that may or may not occur in a favorable market environment. It shows how and at which point an entrepreneur has to intervene in order to direct his / her company to more growth.
