Abstract

Family businesses are of immense economic significance, and therefore a lot of research has been applied to describe the sometimes unexpected behaviour of family businesses. Empirical findings differ and, so far there is no conclusive picture of family business behaviour. Addressing this issue, younger research has focused on the „Stewardship“-theory, a construct that derives from behavioural theories of the firm and outlines the relationship between family and business. The present paper evaluates the current state of research on the usage of „Stew-ardship“ in family business research. Findings show that there is a growing amount of empirical research to this topic over the last years. Moreover, „Stew-ardship“ research can be clustered into four sections: (1) the impact of ownership structure; (2) as explanatory approach of family businesses behaviour; (3) values and goals of family businesses and (4) the internationalization process. Results of empirical findings differ due to lacking common definitions and less generalizable designs.
