Abstract

This paper examines the decision of female and male incumbents to choose a daughter or a son as successor and strives for answering the question, which factors determine this decision. Thereby, the main focus lies on the influence of incumbent’s gender. Different theoretical approaches give hints that the incumbent’s gender can have different impacts on this choice. Based on data generated from a survey of family businesses in the years 2008 and 2009 a logit model was estimated to investigate which factors determine the incumbent’s decision to choose a son or a daughter as successor. The empirical analyses confirm that the incumbent’s gender represents a significant factor of influence: The fact that the incumbent is a woman reduces the probability that the successor is a son. Or in other words: female incumbents prefer - as well as their male counterparts - a successor of their own gender.
