Abstract

Recommendations represent important mechanisms for the emergence of new business relations in the consulting market. But on which basis do recommendations emerge among SMEs? Based on a survey of medium-sized firms, we show that the recommendation behavior of SMEs is not significantly influenced by features such as the size or reputation of the consulting company. Rather, the quality, duration, frequency, and the intended future intensity of cooperation are critical. Different types of trust may thereby adopt a complementary or a substitutive relationship.
