Abstract

his article discusses the assumption that we can classify entrepreneurial activities based on their contribution to economic development and growth. That includes the distinction between productive and unproductive entrepreneurship, “push” and “pull” entrepreneurship and opportunity versus necessity-based entrepreneurship. In general, opportunity-based activities as well as productive entrepreneurship are understood to contribute to employment growth and innovation, whilst necessity-based and unproductive entrepreneurial activities would not contribute (positively). This article challenges such dichotomies, proposing to contextualise them and paying more attention to time and situations as important influences on which type of entrepreneurship can contribute to development and growth.
