Abstract

Process management pursues the continuous improvement of the company's operational business side. Thereby, process performance measurement is a key component. Existing concepts and empirical studies dealing with process performance measurement are largely stemming from the customer-anonymous and more repetitive environment. Less is known on how to implement process management and particularly a process performance measurement in the customer-specific and less repetitive business environment where engineer-to-order companies are operating. Based on various expert interviews and 13 interviews with representatives of engineer-to-order companies the article contributes to this stream of research. We investigate how these companies approach process management, what specific problems they are facing and develop a conceptual framework which proposes to differentiate between routine and non-routine process activities.
