Abstract

Startup firms are vital for the transmission of innovations into marketable products and hence for economic growth. In this process, the availability of venture capital is crucial. The empirical analysis for Switzerland over the period from 1999 to 2009 shows that an increasingly mature venture capital market has developed over time. However, the volumes particularly for early stage financing still are highly cyclical. Moreover, the venture capital landscape shows that three main clusters have emerged, namely the Zurich area, Geneva and Vaud as well as both cantons of Basel. These clusters are characterized by specific industry profiles. Furthermore, the life sciences sector absorbs the bulk of investments, but also displays the highest employment growth in the early stage. As for the success factors, two thirds of the surveyed firms indicate that the availability of venture capital was important or very important for their survival and development.
