Abstract

A considerable stream of literature is devoted to studying entrepreneurial intentions, which are seen as the first step in the process of new venture creation. However, this research lacks generalisability due to the widespread use of demographically limited samples. This article removes this limitation by applying the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to examine the antecedents of entrepreneurial intentions based on a representative sample (N = 1143) of the working-age population in three provinces in Western Finland. The empirical results confirm the predictive validity of the TPB in the entrepreneurial context by showing that (1) the more positive the individual's attitude towards entrepreneurship is, (2) the more positively he perceives the extent of support from his family and friends and (3) the more positively he perceives his own ability to start and run a business, the stronger is his intention to start a business.
