Abstract

Family businesses are very common worldwide. They are the dominating business type in most nations. Researchers, however, seem to agree on that family businesses are different from non-family businesses, due to the influence the family has on the business. The aim of this study was to show how these relational contracts influence the behaviour of family businesses in the tourism sector, and their influence on the day-to-day business of a family business entrepreneur. The qualitative research design of this study attempts to answer this question, using stewardship theory as its theoretical background. Our study showed that sound family relationships are very important for family businesses. The entrepreneur as the head of the family plays an important role in building up strong family relationships. Particularly altruism has to be a very important personality trait of family members.
