Abstract

Research indicates that older individuals are less likely to switch into self-employment than younger ones. As a result, a (changing) age distribution of a population may be an important factor for the rate of new firm creation. Building upon the literature on the determinants of entrepreneurial activity, I study what exactly triggers the decision of individuals to become entrepreneurs when moderated by age. Using data of the IfM Bonn Founder Panel, I find that (a) employment status, (b) entrepreneur's mode of entry and (c) skill confidence are significantly related to the individual's higher age when predicting the probability entrepreneurship transition.
