Abstract

For almost 50 years, the merger of Bosch and Siemens in the household appliance industry was presented to the public as a necessary step toward pooling joint innovation competencies. Both companies argued that this was the only way to survive the general structural crisis and secure their competitive position in the long term. Against the background of the historical development, this paper critically examines the crisis narrative associated with the establishment of the joint venture. It is shown that the crisis language was deliberately used by both companies to legitimize the controversial cooperation. This was intended to dispel antitrust concerns and reinforce the myth that both companies were crisis-proof and resilient.
