Financial Accessibility Challenges and Sustainability of Women-Owned Enterprises in Kisii Township, Kenya

Abstract

The study examines the challenges of financial accessibility and its impact on the sustainability of women-owned enterprises in Kisii Township, Kenya. The research adopted a positivist approach and a descriptive research design targeting legally registered female entrepreneurs. Primary data were collected using questionnaires and analyzed using regression analysis. Findings identified major barriers including lack of collateral, domestic responsibilities, enterprise age, risk aversion, owner characteristics, concentration in low-value sectors, and lower growth prospects. Regression results showed a strong positive correlation between financial accessibility and sustainability. The study concludes that addressing gender-related barriers to finance is essential for enterprise growth. It recommends encouraging adequate capitalization, breaking into high-value markets, conducting financial needs assessments, and strengthening gender sensitization in financial institutions.
