Abstract

Introduction: coarctation of the aorta is defined as a narrowing of the aortic lumen, usually located near the remnant of the ductus arteriosus and below the origin of the left subclavian artery, hence referred to as juxtaductal coarctation. Objective: to describe the clinical evolution of a case of aortic coarctation diagnosed in the Pediatric Cardiology Clinic of the “Pepe Portilla” Pediatric Hospital, Pinar del Río. Case presentation: a one-year-old male patient from San Juan y Martínez was evaluated in the pediatric cardiology clinic due to prenatal clinical history and physical findings suggestive of aortic coarctation. The diagnosis was confirmed by postnatal echocardiography. The patient underwent surgical treatment consisting of resection and end-to-end anastomosis of the aorta, with a favorable postoperative outcome. Conclusions: aortic coarctation is a congenital heart defect that requires early diagnosis and treatment. Management involves long-term clinical follow-up throughout the patient’s life, even after surgical correction.
