Abstract
Introduction: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is one of the most intense pain conditions known to humankind. Objective: To describe the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to trigeminal neuralgia. Methods: An exploratory, observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, and retrospective study was conducted, based on a search for scientific evidence on this topic in PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, Google Scholar, and national and international biomedical journals from the last 5 years in English and Spanish. Results: The study of neurotransmitter syndrome (NT) is feasible due to its delimited focus, as it does not aim to cover the entire pathology but rather to concentrate on specific aspects through different types of studies, such as observational studies, systematic reviews, and quality-of-life studies. Limited literature was found on coping strategies, the effectiveness of psychological interventions (cognitive-behavioral therapy), and support for caregivers of patients with NT. Conclusions: Trigeminal neuralgia stands out as an ideal subject for research due to its complex nature, its devastating human impact, and the significant gaps in knowledge that persist regarding its optimal management. Research in this field is not only academically rigorous but also represents immediate potential for improving patients' lives and making a significant contribution to the subject, thus justifying its selection as a topic of study.
