Abstract

This article reports the design, implementation, and preliminary evaluation of a 3D-printing maker mini-laboratory at the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Zaragoza (FES Zaragoza) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), aimed at generating Open Educational Resources in 3D format (OER 3D) from computed tomography images of real patients. The proposal is grounded in Maker Pedagogy, Design Thinking, and the UNESCO Open Educational Movement. Three-dimensional biomodels generated by processing DICOM files using segmentation software (3D Slicer, Blue Sky Plan) and printed with FDM and SLA technologies were incorporated into active-learning activities with first- and third-year dental students. Results show a perceptible improvement in understanding stomatognathic system anatomy, bidimensional-to-tridimensional image correlation, integration of basic sciences with clinical practice, and the development of collaborative skills. The maker laboratory is positioned as a catalyst for pedagogical innovation with replicable potential across health-science higher education institutions.
