Direct costs and determinants of amputations in diabetic patients in a Nicaraguan hospital in 2024

Abstract

Amputations resulting from diabetes generate significant costs in Nicaragua, where chronic diseases have increased over the last five years. To estimate the direct costs and determinants associated with amputations in diabetic patients in a hospital in 2024. Cross-sectional study conducted with 104 diabetic patients with digital, infra-condylar, and supra-condylar amputations in the orthopedics department. The majority were men over 50 years of age from urban areas, with more than 10 years of diabetes and poor metabolic control. Most amputations were digital, and the average cost was around $2,500 per patient. Amputations in diabetic patients represent a significant financial burden for the hospital and require strategies for the prevention and early care of diabetic foot.
