Abstract

Colostomy, as a surgical intervention involving the diversion of intestinal transit through an abdominal opening, poses both physical and emotional challenges for patients. The proper implementation of a care protocol is essential to prevent peristomal complications and to improve the quality of life of individuals living with a colostomy. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an integral colostomy care protocol at the Regional Hospital of Pilar, considering physical, emotional, and educational aspects from the perspectives of both patients and nurses. A descriptive, quantitative study was conducted through structured surveys administered to 25 colostomy patients and 10 nurses experienced in managing such conditions. Data were collected using Google Forms and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results showed that 65% of patients reported receiving sufficient training for self-care, and 60% were able to change their colostomy bags independently. However, 40% reported skin complications, and 50% expressed limitations in their social lives. From the nurses' perspective, 60% consistently applied the care protocol, and 70% perceived improvements in patients’ quality of life. The colostomy care protocol contributes to enhancing patient autonomy and reducing physical complications, although emotional and social challenges persist. Continuous education, psychological support, and social adaptation are recommended as essential components of comprehensive care.
