Abstract

The general objective of this work is to evaluate water availability in the Portoviejo River basin using remote sensing tools, satellite images, orthophotos obtained by drone and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The importance of the issue lies in the growing water vulnerability of the basin, affected by factors such as climate change, deforestation and population growth, which aggravate water scarcity in several areas. The methodology used consisted of the geospatial analysis of satellite images from the Landsat and Sentinel satellites, as well as orthophotos, processed in the QGIS software. Flow accumulation layers, DEM, and land use were evaluated to identify areas with greater water vulnerability and those with water availability. Among the most important results, a single area with sufficient water availability was identified, while most of the basin is highly vulnerable to water scarcity, especially in low areas and steep slopes. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that the Portoviejo River basin faces water availability challenges, which requires the implementation of sustainable water management and ecosystem conservation strategies
