Abstract

Context: this article explores "extortion vaccines," a form of extortion where local businesses in Ecuador are charged for "protection," highlighting how these practices adversely impact both the economy and the social fabric of the country. This phenomenon reflects a broader trend of organized crime in Latin America, which creates an environment of insecurity and coercion. Objective: to analyze the legal dimensions and trends of 'extortion vaccines' in Ecuador, situating them within the context of extortion practices in Latin America. Methodology: a systematic review of the literature was conducted, selecting 51 relevant articles from databases such as Science Direct, Scielo, Redalyc, and Google Scholar. The inclusion criteria focused on studies discussing extortion from legal and social perspectives. Development: the study highlights how Ecuadorian legislation confronts this challenge and compares legal responses across different Latin American contexts. Conclusion: the main conclusion reveals the critical need to strengthen legal strategies and improve cooperation among nations in the region to effectively combat extortion and its harmful effects.
