Food Production for Self-Consumption: A Strategy to Combat Food Insecurity and Malnutrition in Colombia

This essay aims to analyze and defend the importance of food production for self-consumption in Colombia, covering both rural and urban areas.The goal is to position this practice as a crucial strategy to strengthen food security in the country. The article's structure is organized into sections, starting with the steps to establish crops for self-consumption, followed by a section addressing key strategies in the selection of plants and seeds. It concludes with a third segment focused on characterizing the planting method and the appropriate distance between plants. The main conclusion emphasizes that food self-sufficiency, when achieved through sustainable production strategies and an agroecological and culturally sensitive approach, becomes a fundamental tool for achieving food and nutritional security, as well as attaining food sovereignty and environmental sustainability. The active participation of communities, supported by adequate technical and financial assistance, coupled with the promotion of environmental education and the implementation of public policies, stands out as key factors for the success of these initiatives.
