Burnout and coping strategies in Nicaraguan healthcare personnel: a study in SERMESA hospital

Abstract

The study conducted at SERMESA Hospital in Bologna during February and March 2024 identified a low prevalence of burnout syndrome among medical and nursing staff, although emotional exhaustion was a prominent early symptom of burnout. The dimensions of depersonalization and personal accomplishment showed favorable levels. Significant associations were observed between length of service and specific manifestations of fatigue, such as tiredness at the end of the workday and the perception of being at one's limit. Regarding coping strategies, the use of adaptive mechanisms predominated—such as work-life balance, teamwork, and healthy habits—although maladaptive responses were also present. These findings underscore the importance of implementing preventive programs focused on emotional well-being, especially for longer-term employees, and of fostering institutional spaces that promote self-care and organizational strengthening.
