Innovation in project management: a comprehensive theoretical review

Abstract

Project management faces increasing pressure to adapt to contexts of high uncertainty, digital transformation, and sustainability demands. In this context, this article aims to analyze how innovation is redefining project management practices. To this end, a comprehensive literature review of academic and technical sources updated to 2025 was conducted, covering five key dimensions: agile methodologies, change management, innovative leadership, emerging technologies, and sustainability. The results highlight that incorporating agile frameworks improves operational flexibility, while effective change management and transformational leadership facilitate the adoption of new practices. Emerging technologies, in turn, optimize decision-making, and the integration of social and environmental criteria broadens the impact of projects. Together, these trends shape a more adaptable, strategic, and value-oriented management model. The conclusion underscores the need for a holistic vision that articulates these dimensions, especially in contexts like Latin America, where innovation also involves respecting cultural identities and responding to structural challenges. Innovating in project management is not just an option, but a way to build more resilient and socially responsible organizations.
