La economia mexicana, 1830–1940: obstaculos a la industrializacion (II)

Abstract

A partir de la década de 1880, los obstáculos que habían limitado anteriormente la industrialización mexicana empezaron a desaparecer. La chispa que inició este proceso fue el flujo de capital procedente de Estados Unidos y Europa. En las últimas décadas del siglo XIX penetraron en México capitales y empresarios extranjeros (que conocían tecnologías y mercados concretos de los que no tenían conocimiento los capitalistas mexicanos) que desaguaron y volvieron a entibar las minas, estimularon el crecimiento de la agricultura comercial, desarrollaron la industria petrolífera y financiaron la construcción de un sistema ferroviario nacional. Hacia 1910, según las estimaciones de que se dispone, los extranjeros habían invertido cerca de 2.000 millones de dólares en ferrocarriles, minas y otra serie de empresas de México, una cifra que representaba entre el 67 y el 73 por 100 del total del capital invertido en el país. Casi toda la inversión extranjera se aglutinaba en empresas relacionadas con las exportaciones.
