Crisis de una economia agraria y respuestas campesinas en la quiebra del Antiguo Regimen: Navarra, 1808–1820

Abstract

El período histórico del primer tercio del siglo xix supuso para Navarra la ruptura que conduciría a la quiebra final del Antiguo Régimen. Si en lo relativo al conjunto de la monarquía española, en las dos últimas décadas, el marco conceptual y de análisis ha alumbrado una vía interpretativa bien articulada sobre la evolución económica y la revolución burguesa, en el territorio navarro, hasta muy recientemente, han persistido los esquemas propios de una historiografía política preocupada por destacar la pretendida singularidad histórica que otorgaban los fueros, sin cuestionarse las bases materiales que ayudasen a entender las actitudes y enfrentamientos que, finalmente, se resolvieron en la guerra civil de 1833–1839. No obstante, bastaron los trabajos de M.a Cruz Mina y R. del Río para que se manifestasen las debilidades del mito foral. Desmitificando unas instituciones jurídico-políticas y revelando el significado real de los fueros como leyes propias de un régimen feudal que generaba conflictos de clase, faltaba por resolver en qué medida la liquidación del viejo sistema era reflejo o no de las modificaciones de una sociedad en que la agricultura se constituía en el eje fundamental de su economía, y los campesinos, en consecuencia, en sus protagonistas.
