Historia del consumo e historia del crecimiento. El consumo de tejidos en España, 1700–1850

Abstract

This essay consists of two sections. In the first section we examine the conceptual problems inherent to a demand-side approach to the origin of industrialization. Then we underline the advantages to be gained with these studies in a discipline still largely dominated by a supply-side research agenda. The second section of the article surveys a variety of aspects of the economic history of Spain in the 18th and early 19th centuries. In particular, we stress that changes in the consumption of textile goods took place at a very early date.
