Information and Propaganda in Print: Leibniz’s Eastern Europe

Abstract

In Leibniz’s view, the presence of the Ottoman Empire revealed that the Turkish influence was the key to the significance of Eastern Europe. So long as Eastern Europe belonged to the Turkish sphere, it was a buffer zone of cultures, civilizations, religions, and political powers. After the departure of the Turks it was treated politically at least patronizingly if not downright conquered by aspiring European and Eurasian powers.
