Abstract

Most of the economic studies on tourism have focused on the arrival of international travelers, or on the expenditure they do in the receiving nations, mainly due to the positive impact that they have on the nations they visit, such as economic growth, generation of currencies and employment. In this paper we analyze the departure of Mexican tourists abroad and its relationship with the disposable income through an ARDL Model, estimated with quarterly series for the period 1993Q1-2016Q3. The results indicate the existence of a long-run relationship and give statistical evidence in favor that outbound tourism behaves as a luxury good for Mexicans.
