Finances of the Nation: Minimum Wage in Canada--How Has the Financial Situation of Households Changed over the Past 10 Years?

Abstract

The minimum wage still generates heated debate in Canada, even though it is earned by only a small share of the workforce. This article compares the financial situation of four types of households earning the minimum wage over time (between 2015 and 2025) and across provinces. It argues that the comparison cannot be based solely on wages. The broader context needs to be taken into account, including the tax system, benefits offered, and the cost of living. Under this broad view, the real disposable income of households has increased over the 10-year period, in all provinces and for each type of household. The rate of coverage of basic needs has also seen across-the-board increases, but the extent of these increases varies by province and type of household.
