A Reanalysis of "The Town with No Poverty": A Reply

Abstract

David Green (2022) argues that MINCOME data do not support claims that a GAI reduces health care costs. I stand behind the conclusions drawn in "The Town with No Poverty" (2011): MINCOME is associated with a significant reduction in hospitalization rates among subjects relative to matched comparators. Green's critique depends heavily on data from 1974 and 1975 which were biased by the pre-announcement of MINCOME. It also rests on implicit and questionable assumptions about how hospitals operate, particularly in rural and remote parts of Canada, and how social determinants, including income, affect health outcomes. I provide evidence that corroborates my analytical choices and supports the conclusion drawn in the original paper.
