The Classical Theory Of International Trade After Sraffa

Abstract

The purpose of the article is twofold. On the one hand, it evaluates the influence of Sraffa (1960) both on criticism of the Heckscher-Ohlin-Samuelson theory and on the development of a neo-Ricardian approach to international trade. On the other hand, it analyses the contribution of Sraffa (1930) to the interpretation of the principle of comparative advantage, and its consequences for the Classical theory of international trade. It concludes by showing that the originality of the Classical theory lies in the role that authors attribute to foreign trade in the development of the division of labour.
