Abstract

[EN] Introduction: This article examines the professionalization of writers in Argentina during the 1920s through the case of the illustrated magazine Caras y Caretas. Methodology: A qualitative approach was applied, combining theoretical review, documentary analysis, and examination of editorial practices within the sociological framework of the literary field. Results: Findings indicate that technological advances in printing, literacy policies, the growth of the publishing market, and the mass circulation of illustrated press created favorable conditions for writers’ autonomous and paid work. Reader participation, together with the use of images and advertising, contributed to new cultural production dynamics that strengthened the writer’s professional role. Conclusions: The professionalization of writers emerged from the interplay between urban modernity, cultural market dynamics, and institutional transformations within the literary field.
