Banca libre y el cese de pagos de 1879 en los albores de la regeneración

Abstract

En un contexto de déficit fiscal presente en Colombia en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, el presente ensayo explora la relación entre la banca libre y el gobierno con el cese de pagos del año 1879. Se abordan los antecedentes de la deuda colombiana, el asentamiento de la banca comercial con apoyo estatal y las renegociaciones de la deuda externa. Se vislumbran las causas concretas del cese de pagos basándose en el discurso y decisiones del gobierno de turno, para luego analizar la dependencia entre la banca y el gobierno anterior al régimen ‘Regeneracionista’, para concluir que el cese de pagos ocurrido en este periodo se debió más a razones políticas y sociales que económicas.
